BAY STATE PARENT April 2005 Issue PEDIAMEDIA Review of Books, Music, and Videos by susan scully petroni Life Lessons in 26.2 Miles Pellie Runs A Marathon By Michele Bredice Craemer Illustrated by Elizabeth Lavin This is a great inspirational book for children - and parents too. When the author was training for and running marathons, she kept a journal. Looking back at those journals, she realized that many life lessons can be learned through physical activity, such as goal-setting, the power of a positive attitude, perseverance, strong will, and the importance of support from others. So, she decided to put those lessons into a self-published children's book. This book tells the story of Pellie, a duck, who despite obstacles continues to push towards its goal of completing a marathon. The author has messages in every chapter but she said her main message was "Run Right To It!" "Whatever is important to you in life and whatever you would like to try, just run right to it," said the Upton mother of two. This Massachusetts mom had some help with the book from her two sons. The author chose a duck as a main character because of her son Patrick's love for a duck he has slept with since he was six months old. Her son Will helped her brainstorm a name "Pellie" that was neither male nor female. Read this book with your child in anticipation of this year's Boston Marathon, just weeks away. |
