New England Sports Magazine, August 2006 issue Book Introduce Children to Triathlon CoCo is quite a pup-most Labrador retrievers I know like to mooch for treats and then take an extended nap in the sun. But CoCo, a black lab and the main character in the children's book, CoCo Loves To Tri, has a goal - to complete in his first triathlon. CoCo Loves To Tri is local author Michele Bredice Craemer's second children's book. The first, Pellie Runs A Marathon, followed a duck through his first attempt at 26.2 miles. The book, which comes out this month, is fun and fast-paces, with delightful illustration by Jess Golden. Children learn that CoCo has trained hard for his race, but still gets nervous before the swim. "He jumps into the ocean. It's crowded, wavy and cold. Swimming's not his favorite, if the truth must be told!" Every character has a favorite part of the triathlon and passes CoCo in the early parts of the race, but CoCo perseveres on the bike and the swim, knowing the run is his strong suit. Through Craemer's energetic prose and Golden's illustrations, children learn the value of working toward a goal with hard work and resolve - and that the family dog should get out for a little more exercise. |
